GETTING STARTED
How do we register?
Complete Find Your Fit with your player’s age, experience, preferred location and goals. Our team will help identify suitable opportunities and explain the next step. You can register before tryout dates are announced.
Do returning LA Surf players need to register?
Yes. Every player registers and is evaluated for each new season. Returning families should select the returning-player option and share their current team and next-season goals. Coaches may discuss opportunities beforehand, but returning players still complete the process.
Which age group should we choose, and can my player play up?
Enter your player’s date of birth in the form. Most LA Surf programs use August 1–July 31 age grouping; MLS NEXT Homegrown uses calendar years. Start with your correct age group. Playing up requires director approval following an evaluation of technical, tactical and physical readiness.
Can we explore more than one location or program?
Yes. Share your preferences through Find Your Fit and coordinate evaluation arrangements with our team. Programs, age groups and available places vary by location; not every region offers every level.
What are the Boys and Girls Elite programs?
Boys Elite includes MLS NEXT Homegrown, MLS NEXT Academy, EA Academy and EA2. Girls Elite includes Girls Academy, GA Aspire and DPL. These programs have different competitive demands, training schedules and travel commitments. Placement is based on evaluation and availability.
What if we miss open tryouts or want to join during the season?
Open tryouts are scheduled evaluation sessions. Outside those dates, an in-season evaluation may be arranged during team training. Complete Find Your Fit so our team can advise you, subject to roster availability, eligibility and applicable registration rules.
TRYOUT DAY & PLACEMENT
Where and when are tryouts held?
Check your preferred location or program page for announced dates, times and venues. Follow the confirmation instructions provided after registration, as arrangements vary by age group and team.
What should my player bring?
Bring soccer cleats, shin guards, water and suitable training clothing. Check your confirmation for any additional requirements, arrival instructions or venue-specific footwear guidance.
How many sessions should we attend?
Attend as many of the relevant scheduled sessions as possible. This gives coaches more opportunities to assess your player and helps your family understand the environment. Let the coach know if you cannot attend a session.
How are players evaluated, and is a place guaranteed?
Coaches assess ability, potential and development needs through training activities and game situations. You may request an evaluation at your preferred level. Placement depends on assessment and available places; attending does not guarantee a team offer.
When will we hear back, and how long do we have to accept?
The existing club guidance allows approximately 4–10 days for placement decisions. Offers generally require a response within 48 hours. Follow the deadline in your invitation and contact the coach promptly if you need more time.
What if my player is not offered a place?
Our team can help explore another team, location or program where appropriate. Contact Marjorie Kellerman for guidance on available options.
COMMITMENT & COSTS
What training, travel and season commitment should we expect?
Schedules vary by team and program. Many teams train 2–3 times weekly, while some elite teams train more frequently and involve additional travel. Ask your director about season dates, attendance, tournaments, breaks and any high-school soccer restrictions before accepting.
What does it cost to join?
Fees vary by program, age group and location. Request the full breakdown of club fees, payment terms and additional expenses—including uniforms, tournaments and travel—before accepting your place.
Is financial aid available?
LA Surf offers need-based financial assistance, subject to eligibility and available funding. Contact our team to ask about the application process and required documentation.
Are uniforms required?
Yes. Players must purchase the required club uniform. Your team will provide current ordering instructions, required items and pricing. Confirm which uniform expenses are separate from club fees.
